[SEMCO] SEMCO Reminder

Good afternoon, SEMCO members:

We’ve received a great deal of new members recently and currently have about 1,100 active emails in the membership list, which is great; Woods Hole Sea Grant and WHOI are thrilled that this continues to be a valuable tool for the Southeastern Massachusetts community. 

With those new members, this is a good time to send a reminder that as a registered and approved member you automatically have direct release rights to the entire membership list. That means anything that you write and send directly to semco at whoi.edu is going to all 1,059 people who have signed up for the list. It does not require a request to send it to followers - you’ve already done it! Please keep this in mind as you draft messages, notices, etc. to avoid the release of extraneous, or potential unwanted info.

If you have administrative questions, or want to check if something did or did not go out, please email me directly jbrodeur at whoi.edu and/or listmgr at whoi.edu. The membership management tool I have is robust.

As a reminder, the general SEMCO homepage (http://mailman.whoi.edu/mailman/listinfo/semco) has details on signing up, removing yourself, receiving messages in a daily digest, etc.

Additionally, we wanted to let the entire list know that we are in the process of working with the WHOI legal office to draft specific guidelines, etiquette and acceptable use policy. This is not an attempt to introduce prior restraint or become more active in filtering information dissemination, just to put a framework around it that does not currently exist and should. If you have any thoughts, suggestions or comments on that process, or what you feel should or should not be included, feel free to contact me via email.
