Description: Shorebirds that breed in the Arctic are on their way south to wintering grounds now. On the way, many thousands stop to feed on the mud and sand flats of Plymouth Bay and rest in the protected dunes and beaches when the tide is high. We will look for multiple species, including: Semipalmated Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Willet, Greater Yellowlegs, Black-bellied Plover, Semipalmated Plover, Sanderling, Whimbrel and Red Knot. We will also look for our beach-nesting birds, such as Piping Plover, Least Tern, Willet and Horned Lark.
This trip is geared toward all birders from beginners to experts. You will learn about the importance of Plymouth Bay to migratory shorebirds and the management practices that help to protect them and beach-nesting birds. You will also learn how to identify different species of shorebirds by behavior, sound and physical appearance. Plus, we will enjoy a peaceful evening in a spectacular spot - truly a birder’s and nature lover’s delight!
