Dear Local Friends of SEA,
You're invited to join us on the Sea Education Association campus for our next faculty lecture!
WHEN: Sunday, Feb. 28, 1 p.m.
WHERE: Sea Education Association
James L. Madden Center Lecture Hall
171 Woods Hole Road, Falmouth, MA
Free and Open to the Public
Light refreshments will be served
About the Lecture: "Renaissance Mapmaking and the Marine Sciences"
What did navigators and mapmakers in 16th and 17th century Europe know about "scientific" phenomena such as currents, winds, and marine life? Did their understanding of the marine environment derive entirely, or mostly, from superstition? Or can we discern in their work accurate depictions of marine phenomena based on empirical knowledge?
This illustrated talk by SEA Semester Visiting Professor Dr. Dan Brayton will offer a "reading" of two exemplary early modern cartographic masterpieces, the Carta Marina et Descriptio of Olaus Magnus, and the Chart of the South Pacific (pictured above) by Hessel Gerritsz. You might find that more is going on in both of them than immediately meets the eye.
About the Lecturer
Dr. Dan Brayton is an Associate Professor of English and American Literatures at Middlebury College and a SEA Semester visiting professor. He teaches courses on the literature of the sea, environmental literature, early modern drama (including Shakespeare), utopias and dystopias, regional literature, and world literature. He holds a doctorate degree from Cornell University.
