What: O is for Osprey: A Conservation Success Story. Third in the Making Waves in Coastal Conservation speaker series sponsored by Goldenrod Foundation.
When: February 13, 2 p.m.
Where: Brewster Chapel, Church Street, Plymouth. Viewing this map is highly recommended!
Who: Me! Dorie Stolley, program manager for Goldenrod Foundation
Details: A predator at the top of the food chain, Osprey were devastated by the use of the pesticide DDT, which caused reproductive failure. Once common along the coast, their numbers dropped precipitously along with that of our national emblem, the Bald Eagle.
A distinguished scientist and self-avowed nature-lover, Rachel Carson, exposed the dangers of DDT in her book “Silent Spring” outraging people and catalyzing them to action. Through a combination of legislation and the commitment of many dedicated citizens, the Osprey was protected and nurtured and once again graces our shores in high numbers.
I will speak about this ongoing conservation success story and how the Beach Ambassadors, Goldenrod’s volunteer corps, use their Osprey Viewing Station at Nelson Park in Plymouth as a focal point for nature discovery and the fostering of a stewardship ethic. I have wonderful photos from a variety of talented photographers to share, as well as some video. I might even persuade some of the Beach Ambassadors to do a reenactment!
I hold an M.S. in Wildlife Biology from Utah State University and an M.A. in Communication from Johns Hopkins University. I worked for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as a refuge biologist for 12 years before leaving to start my own business, Three Birds Consulting, which specializes in outreach, education and community engagement pertaining to the natural environmental. I am a consultant for Goldenrod Foundation, a nonprofit committed to conservation of the coastal environment for wildlife and people.
Hope to see you there!
