BREWSTER, MA ­The Cape Cod Museum of Natural 
History in Brewster presents Muskeget Island, 
Gray Seal Maternity Ward with author Crocker 
Snow, Jr. Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at 1pm.

  Muskeget Island, the smallest of Nantucket’s 
three islands, is a treeless, uninhabited, 
250-acre island halfway between Nantucket and 
Martha's Vineyard and has become the primary 
maternity ward of gray seals in Nantucket and 
Cape Cod waters. In the past 20 years, this tiny 
island has undergone an ecological dynamic change 
caused by the overpopulation of gray seals that 
has grown from 100 in 1996 to about 10,000 today, 
where in the dead of winter, gray seals birth and 
breed. The impact of these large and voracious 
seals on the island's fragile ecosystem, its 
terrain and other special wildlife, is a source 
of amazement and concern to scientists and researchers.

Crocker Snow Jr. has been going to Muskeget 
Island for 65 years, and is now part owner and 
effectively the steward of what is a National 
Natural Landmark with the Department of 
Interior.  Author of a recent book Muskeget: Raw. 
Restless, Relentless Island and narrator of a new 
documentary about the seals on Muskeget, 
award-winning journalist Crocker Snow will share 
his years of unique observation and experience of 
trying to keep the island "forever wild".
