Friday, August 26 - BUEN VIAJE, OSPREY

Where: Nelson Memorial Park, Plymouth
When: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Who: All are welcome
How: Just show up
Cost: FREE

All are invited to wish a buen viaje to the Osprey family, which is preparing to migrate south for the winter. Participants may watch the birds through a spotting scope, learn fun facts about these “fish hawks,” touch a replica of an osprey egg, test their skill on the bird migration obstacle course and decorate a pair of “binoculars.”

Ospreys are fish-eating raptors that will nest on man-made platforms, such as the one built at Nelson Park for an Eagle Scout project. This summer the parents raised four chicks, which means the fish supply was abundant, and predators, such as Great Horned Owls and Bald Eagles were kept away.

At the end of August, the parents will leave first on migration, heading to separate wintering locations in South America. And, although the chicks only recently learned to fly, they will head south to the Caribbean, soaring over open ocean over one thousand miles to find a safe and fish-filled location to spend the winter.

The rain date is August 27, same time. For other events, visit our calendar at: www.goldenrod.org/blog/calendar-of-events.

The Beach Ambassadors are volunteers dedicated to sharing the delights of coastal nature and ways people and wildlife can coexist on the beach. The Beach Ambassador program is a project of Goldenrod Foundation, a nonprofit based in Plymouth.
