*Wild Care Rescues Osprey Dangling from 60 Foot Tree in Orleans*
*Eastham, MA. *On Friday, August 5th, Wild Care, Inc., a wildlife rescue
and rehabilitation center in Eastham, responded to a call for an adult
Osprey seen “dangling” from a 60-foot tree near the Linnell Rd. marsh in
Orleans. The bird was thought to have been there for 3 days, prior to Wild
Care being notified. Wild Care Wildlife Rehabilitator, Amy Webster,
responded to the scene along with the Orleans Police Dept. Also notified
was local tree worker Scott McLeod, who had already cleared a 50-foot trail
through the thick brush, and was standing at the base of the said tree when
Amy and the police arrived. McLeod proceeded to climb to the top of the
tree and was successful in removing and lowering the treetop from which the
bird was dangling. Once the Osprey was lowered to the ground, Amy Webster
quickly examined the bird’s condition. “I was relieved that her foot was
not fractured, and there was no necrosis or lacerations,” stated Amy
Webster. “The bird was caught in silt fencing, and it was entangled around
all 4 toes and ankle. Fortunately for the bird, all of her toes were bound
with equal pressure, preventing her from worse injury.” Amy swaddled the
Osprey in a blanket and placed her into a special laundry basket used for
containing large raptors safely. The bird was transported to Wild Care and
given supportive care, and is expected to make a full recovery. The entire
rescue operation took 3 hours. “This is an incredible example of the
wonderful service that Wild Care provides to the community and to the
wildlife of Cape Cod,” says Wild Care’s Executive Director Stephanie Ellis.
“Wild Care is the only local wildlife rehabilitation facility that conducts
rescues. Osprey are large and feisty birds. This is not a bird that we
would ask the public to attempt to rescue on their own. We are so fortunate
to also have the assistance of the Orleans Police Department, Scott McLeod,
and the caring individuals who contacted us about this bird. It was truly a
team effort, with a great outcome.”
Osprey are back from the brink of near extirpation from Cape Cod, after
their population plummeted in the 70’s due to DDT. With the ban of DDT in
1972, and the development of programs to monitor and install nesting
platforms for Osprey, the species has once again reached a sustainable
population on Cape Cod.
*WILD CARE’s wildlife rehabilitators treat birds, mammals and reptiles
brought to the center, with the goal of releasing them back into the wild
when they are capable of independent survival. Through public education,
WILD CARE works to prevent wildlife casualties and works to engage the
community in conservation through volunteerism. Since our founding WILD
CARE has accepted over 25,000 wild creatures, representing over 275 species
of native birds, mammals and reptiles. If you encounter injured, orphaned
or ill wildlife please call the WILD CARE of Cape Cod helpline at
508-240-2255. Visit WILD CARE’s website at www.wildcarecapecod.org
