The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents
Naturescape Gallery
Close Encounters of the Ocean Kind; a Photographic Journey
with
John J. King ll
BREWSTER, MA Naturescape Gallery at the Cape
Cod Museum of Natural History is proud to present
photographer, explorer, author, and Chatham
conservationist John King September 1 through October 31st 2016.
John King has been fascinated with the natural
movements of wildlife, of all species as they
make their yearly and sometimes bi-yearly
migrations going about their business of life
around the planet. Cape Cod is a unique
laboratory to observe birds, marine mammals, fish
and even insects in pristine natural surroundings
and why he has chosen to live here.
Ever since the ground breaking BBC documentary
Planet Earth debuted in 2007 featuring the
astounding white shark breaching imagery shot in
South Africa, King has been obsessed with seeing
this absolutely perfect apex predator in the
wild. This obsession has taken him around the
world to South Africa, Mexico, and South
Australia to observe study and record the
behavior of sharks, especially white sharks, over
the past seven years. Imagine his absolute joy to
wake up one day in 2009 and learn that these
predators actually occur here on Cape Cod! Life
has not been the same since that moment.
John is an entrepreneur with a diverse resume,
who has strong ties to Cape Cod that span many
generations. He has been pursuing a lifelong
passion to experience and record the earths wild
places and wild things through his photography.
Locally he is the skipper of the R/v Aleutian
Dream which is facilitating the white shark
population study currently being conducted by the
Massachusetts Shark Research Program with support
from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy in
outer Cape waters. He is also a co-founder
together with his wife Pam, of The Common Flat
Project, a conservation organization dedicated to
creating awareness of the importance of earths
biodiversity especially on Cape Cod. Their first
book entitled: Wild Cape Cod, Free by Nature was
published by Schiffer Publishing in 2012.
Free with Museum Admission / September hours:
Daily 11am 3pm / October hours: Wed. Sun. 11am 3pm
