The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents
Sonic Sea
  A Film By
NRDC / Imaginary Forces / IFAW / Diamond Docs

BREWSTER, MA The Cape Cod Museum of Natural
History is proud to present the documentary film,
Sonic Sea, Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 6:30pm.

Sonic Sea, written by Mark Monroe of Diamond
Docs, directed by Michelle Dougherty of Imaginary
Forces and Daniel Hinerfeld of the Natural
Resources Defense Council, is a 60 minute
documentary chronicling the devastating impact of
industrial and military ocean noise on whales and
other marine life. Oceans are not a silent world,
but a dynamic sonic symphony of sound. Whales,
dolphins, porpoises, and other marine mammals
have evolved to take advantage of this perfect
sonic medium. Just as we rely on sight to
survive, they depend on sound to hunt for food,
find mates, and detect predators.

At any given time there are 60,000 commercial
ships traversing the seas worldwide creating a
cacophony of noise that masks marine mammals’
ability to hear and be heard threatening this
fragile world. Sonic Sea is about protecting life
in our waters from the destructive effects of oceanic noise pollution.

Sonic Sea features several charismatic
scientists, including Ken Balcomb, the former
Navy pilot and acoustics expert who proved to the
world that naval sonar is killing whales, as well
as the musician and environmental activist,
Sting, whose moving interview connects the sonic
world of marine life with our sonic world on
land. The film offers solutions, thereby giving
hope for a quieter ocean, and underscores that
the ocean's destiny is inextricably bound with our own.

  Admission is Free
