[SEMCO] Marine education instructor position in Nahant, MA

The Northeastern University Marine Science Center has an opening for a full-time, benefits-eligible Outreach Program Instructor.  The position is based in Nahant, MA.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Outreach Program Instructor is responsible for developing and implementing meaningful and effective programs to develop ocean literacy in youth, and to foster their interest in and awareness about the study of marine science and related careers. It will also facilitate the professional development of educators around marine- and STEM-related knowledge and skills.

The Marine Science Center Outreach Program serves thousands of youth and educators each year through the delivery of place-based education programs that focus particularly on local coastal and marine ecosystems. Utilizing the University’s teaching, research, seawater, and natural resources, the Instructor delivers hands-on, standards-based academic experiences to PreK-12 youth in the field and in the classroom, both onsite and offsite. The Instructor also participates actively in the delivery of events for the general public that connect local communities to the work being done at the MSC.

The Outreach Instructor will also assist with marketing and communications for the Center, including developing content for news stories and promotional materials.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in science or environmental education, marine science, or related field required, Master’s degree preferred. Four to six years of experience designing and delivering effective science education programs required, preferably in a field-based and/or informal setting. Experience with curriculum development, including alignment with state learning standards. Knowledge of, and research experience with, New England intertidal and subtidal marine ecology. Experience with lab and field research methods employed by marine scientists. Experience with marketing and promoting science content to the general public, particularly using technologically relevant media; and experience and comfort with public speaking. Must be able to lift 40 lbs (e.g., buckets of seawater) several times a week.

Scuba certification, AAUS Scientific Diver certification, First Aid/CPR, and related local experience in New England preferred. Must be willing to be subjected to background check and complete related requirements of the University’s Policy on Programs Involving Minors. Must meet and maintain eligibility requirements to drive University vans according to the University’s Policy on Use of Vehicles for University Purposes.

This appointment is funded by an award received from an outside source. The duration of this position is contingent upon the continued availability of funding from this award at its current financial level.
