About the Lecture
For more than a century, scholars have described an "Atlantic World," where ships connected Europe and Africa to the Americas and Caribbean, creating a web of commerce, cultural exchange, resource exploitation and devastating population loss in the New World. Because it is so much more vast than the Atlantic, it is only recently that the same kind of scrutiny is being given to the Pacific.
In this illustrated lecture, Dr. Mary Malloy will describe new ways of looking at the "Pacific World." Starting with the voyages of Polynesians, Dr. Malloy will discuss how human populations have effected and managed island environments. She will examine the impact of Europeans and Americans on cultures and ecosystems, including the collapse of indigenous populations to disease and the decimation of a number of species with economic value back in the Atlantic world or in Asia, including whales, tortoises, sea otters, and sandalwood. She will draw connections, both ancient and modern, among various destinations around the Pacific Rim and Oceanic islands.

About the Lecturer
As a Professor of Maritime Studies and Program Director of SEA Semester: The Global Ocean<https://t.e2ma.net/click/7r7qk/3oi2km/r7oaed>, Dr. Mary Malloy<https://t.e2ma.net/click/7r7qk/3oi2km/7zpaed> has traveled aboard SEA's Pacific ship, the SSV Robert C. Seamans<https://t.e2ma.net/click/7r7qk/3oi2km/nsqaed>, along the Northwest Coast of North America, from Hawaii to French Polynesia, and in the waters of New Zealand. She has a PhD from Brown University and has written numerous books and articles dealing with trans-Pacific trade.
