Dear marine science experts, educators, and enthusiasts,

I am writing to invite you to participate in the 4th Annual North Shore, and 1st Annual Boston, High School Marine Science Symposia (HSMSS). <applewebdata://B8AE82AB-AE86-4D8C-95CB-8D5761B0B25D/ma-marine-ed.org>

Some of you may be familiar with this event, that has been sponsored by the Massachusetts Marine Educators (MME) for the past couple of decades hosted at UMASS Dartmouth, with North Shore events sponsored by the Northeastern University Marine Science Center and hosted at Endicott College and Salem State University since 2013.

This year we are excited to announce that we will be hosting two events, to attract both North Shore and Boston audiences, and presenters are invited to attend one or both events on the following days:

  * Wednesday, March 9th at Northeastern University in Boston
  * Wednesday, March 16th at Salem State University in Salem

Individuals or teams of presenters are welcome to deliver a workshop. If you are willing and able to participate, click on the link at the bottom of the email to register. An event flyer is attached.

The format of both events is welcoming remarks followed by a variety of hands-on workshop sessions (led by scientists/educators/ experts like YOU!), followed by a single keynote presentation and then lunch. We are looking for presenters to deliver three 40-minute, back-to-back identical sessions to high school students in the morning. There will be 15-25 students in each session, small enough to make it really meaningful and hands-on.

The workshop topic would be of your choosing, however, we are asking that presentations be engaging, hands-on, interactive. It doesn't necessarily have to be your primary work/research focus and workshops can have more than one presenter per session. Here are some tips to consider when presenting to youth audiences<http://learn-differently.com/files/2011/08/top-ten-mistakes-article-2011.pdf>. If you are interested, but worried about how you might fill 50 minutes, let us know - we may have some ideas to help make it a successful presentation.

Both events will run from 8:30am to 1:00pm. The tentative schedule is as follows. Presenters are provided a light breakfast and lunch, but are not required to stay for lunch.

8:30 - Registration Opens
8:50 - Opening Remarks
9:00 - Workshops A
9:45 - Workshops B
10:30 - Workshop C
11:15 - Keynote Presentation
12:10 - Lunch
1:00 - Event ends, students depart

If you are willing and able to participate, would you please register by Friday, December 18th at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TDJJN2W

Please share this request with colleagues, students and any other relevant contacts. We thank you for considering this opportunity to help inspire the next generation of potential marine scientists!

Best,

Val and the rest of the HSMSS organizing committee
