Bees & Other Pollinators
A Cape Cod Field School offered by Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
2-day course: Saturday, August 15 & Sunday, August 16
Summer is the high time for insects and pollen-gathering bees are the essence of the season. So let your summer take flight with the study of the biology, behavior, adaptations, and identification of these beautiful, interesting, and extremely valuable insects. Emphasis of this course will be on natural history, biology, and identification of the often unnoticed, but hard working, native bees. We will also learn about the habitat needs of these pollinating insects, and to help them out, we will start construction on a "bee hotel" designed for Mason and Leafcutter bees. We will spend most of our time at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary availing ourselves of its wide variety of habitats and laboratory equipment.
Instructor: Gail Howe Trenholm is both a Master Naturalist and Founder and President of Nature Visits Inc., an environmental education organization in Toronto, Ontario. Prior to moving to Canada she was Conservation Coordinator at Massachusetts Audubon's Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center and Wildlife Sanctuary in Worcester. She was an active member of the Massachusetts Butterfly Club, and recently presented on pollinators and bee hotel design at the Massachusetts Environmental Educators Association's annual conference. Gail has conducted many insect field school programs for Wellfleet Bay and those who have taken her courses know her enthusiasm for insects is both inspiring and contagious.
Register early - just 2 spaces left! Course is limited to 10 people to ensure a small student-instructor ratio.
Cost is $200 for Mass Audubon members; $240 for non-members and includes instruction, and a pizza dinner on Saturday night and a continental breakfast on Sunday. Sanctuary housing is not available; contact us for a list of local accommodations.
