National Marine Life Center to Release Successfully Rehabilitated Seal 

 

Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.  The National Marine Life Center (NMLC) is
releasing a rehabilitated seal Monday, July 6th, at 7pm at Scusset Beach in
Sandwich, MA. Cilantro, a juvenile grey seal, stranded on South Beach in
Chatham, MA on May 2, 2015. He was rescued by the International Fund for
Animal Welfare and transported to NMLC. Cilantro came in with a very unique
infected wound on his lower back. This animal was actually heat-branded by
researchers, a fairly common practice in Canada. The wound from the brand
had become very infected and was in need of medical attention. Cilantro was
also having difficulty breathing due to an infestation of lungworm, and had
developed a small abscess in one of his rear flippers. He has been receiving
medical treatment, was tube fed for about a week, and quickly transitioned
to eating fish. Cilantro has a lot of spunk and has been giving our
volunteers some wonderful experience in seal restraint. He has packed on his
blubber layer, and has now made a full recovery and is ready to be reunited
with the Big Blue. We hope you will join us in wishing Cilantro farewell at
this exciting occasion!
