Phytoplankton are microscopic marine plants, and like terrestrial plants, they contain
chlorophyll and require sunlight in order to live and grow.
In a balanced ecosystem, phytoplankton provide food for a wide range of sea creatures
including larval fish, shrimp, snails, and jellyfish.
Beth Larson will explain why these miniscule organisms are vital not only to the
 marine ecosystem, but to us all.

Beth has been a research assistant in the Ecology Department at the Center for Coastal
Studies for five years.  She currently studies both the zooplankton and phytoplankton
of Cape Cod Bay. Although Beth spends winters in the lab, you may very well meet
 her during the summer at the CCS kiosk on MacMillan Pier, where she works to promote
ocean literacy to both residents and visitors.
