Barrier Beaches as Habitat for Rare Moths:

Westport Barrier Beach System as a Case Study

Barrier beaches, until recently, have often been ignored by Lepidopterists for providing
habitat for only a few hardy moths. The importance of barrier beaches and associated
coastal habitats has become more understood through recent survey efforts along 
coastal Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, but our knowledge is still 
incomplete. The survey work at the Westport Harbor barrier beach system, for which
the Buzzards Bay Coalition contracted the Lloyd Center, has added significantly 
to our understanding of barrier beaches' importance to moth biodiversity.  This 
presentation will highlight the habitat requirements for the four species listed
 in the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act as well as 20 additional rare or barrier
beach affiliated moths documented during this survey.

This talk is free and open to the public.

Since its founding in 1972, the Westport Land Conservation Trust has  assisted landowners
in protecting more than 3,988 acres in Westport,  Massachusetts. WLCT is a private
non-governmental organization dedicated  to local land conservation on behalf of
 the Westport community. The  organization accepts gifts of land and conservation
restrictions on  land, and assists farm owners in preserving farmland with agricultural
 preservation restrictions.
