You Did It!
Remember back in November, when we asked you to petition MA Governor Deval Patrick
to save state budget funding that was critical for protecting our waters? Well -
 YOU DID IT!
We received unofficial word towards the end of December that the Governor had reinstated
the line item, which included $150,000 for the Center's Cape Cod Bay Monitoring
Program.
Thank you so much to everyone who responded to our call to action; evidently the
public response had much to do with Governor Patrick's decision. Whatever you said,
it was strong and convincing, and proof positive that your voice CAN make a difference!

Return of the Right Whales

Aerial observers Corey Accardo and Jessica Thompson aboard NESAS Skymaster.

On the afternoon of December 22, 2014 the Center's right whale population studies
team spotted five rare and critically endangered North Atlantic right whales during
an aerial survey of Cape Cod Bay. This was the first confirmed sighting of the season.

The Center's aerial surveys, which take place weekly throughout the December - May
season, have shown that, on average, one-half of the total estimated population
of 520 right whales have visited the Bay each winter and spring during the last
5 years, drawn by dense concentrations of the zooplankton upon which they feed.

Collecting zooplankton samples from the
deck of the R/V Shearwater.

As always, the CCS right whale habitat team will be on the water whenever weather
allows, collecting samples to determine the concentration and type of zooplankton
currently in the Bay, and documenting the whales feeding patterns and behaviors.

Comparisons of these data with those from previous years should eventually allow
Center scientists to document ongoing changes in the whales' critically important
habitat and their use of its rich food resources.

As the season progresses we will keep you up to date with the latest right whale
 sightings via Facebook [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001n5Jvb9aWEy88NCUxG7p0X4yn7_azhQnftSqzNsZ0XNKzV5D7urTrw6fZLEiOSdGYvhWiDfpQpP7okg07-QKfP-NqyM0sKgMO93gcdpZaivY17gAWvD-CZnWQRrBOpB_6BC_LWaDynRK_vR2_RAJAwPuNAvTAdatpT-uxyX1UIkizJtgJp0At3p8s2ZrEOp_E&c=MxTfrqqZMHZLrQS8yMmuDxbGPDm3-SaVLbTunlfxWdxJ4seD3bW1Yg==&ch=r_54ny9I7GXkvUGy8EtVAe7S_1yFGRAwekwe7vxODbOLPlQr-TEV5A==],

New Collaborations, New Projects

The Center has long fostered a collaborative approach to research, encouraging parterships
both with other environmental organizations and between our own diverse but complementary
programs.

Ryders Cove, Pleasant Bay, Chatham.

The latest of these Center-wide projects is an environmental study of Pleasant Bay
that brings together scientists from the Center's seafloor mapping and coastal geology
programs, marine fisheries initiative, and seal studies project.

Pleasant Bay is the largest estuary on Cape Cod, and one of the most biologically
diverse and productive marine habitats on the East Coast. Located just north of
the Cape's "elbow", its watershed is spread over four towns: Orleans, Chatham,
Harwich and Brewster.

The Pleasant Bay Marine Resource Assessment Project, which is funded by the Friends
of Pleasant Bay [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001n5Jvb9aWEy88NCUxG7p0X4yn7_azhQnftSqzNsZ0XNKzV5D7urTrw3A8wcW9BN5vwUPRLbe3TgMYU3ODQS79sanbBtdyqIxvzxDIGEg9wLBPvNxDSrr-y-B4EziEkjic7pc1v9CCwJ8Pw6OtBgiW3uEqtGj674sBcpJ3RyGYuQNARzyuR9gDnwjWRv7GPye1&c=MxTfrqqZMHZLrQS8yMmuDxbGPDm3-SaVLbTunlfxWdxJ4seD3bW1Yg==&ch=r_54ny9I7GXkvUGy8EtVAe7S_1yFGRAwekwe7vxODbOLPlQr-TEV5A==]
and developed in cooperation with the Pleasant Bay Alliance [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001n5Jvb9aWEy88NCUxG7p0X4yn7_azhQnftSqzNsZ0XNKzV5D7urTrw3A8wcW9BN5vVIzMLv8b1JlZvwBdpf4RAfy2dksnX_nZZ4jAM0DaBjOnmgEYLesF7BIsFicxxI_mi7k-reyMH66d0tpe1EsO3SJVnYAxOhfuVjKkgbvuDI0=&c=MxTfrqqZMHZLrQS8yMmuDxbGPDm3-SaVLbTunlfxWdxJ4seD3bW1Yg==&ch=r_54ny9I7GXkvUGy8EtVAe7S_1yFGRAwekwe7vxODbOLPlQr-TEV5A==]
and State environmental scientists, got underway in summer 2014.

Violet Doucette (CCS intern) processes
benthic samples collected in Pleasant Bay

This two-year long study will provide detailed maps of features such as bottom type,
submerged aquatic vegetation, shellfish beds, and other features such as sediment
transport pathways, derelict fishing gear and marine debris, marked and unmarked
mooring blocks, and hazards to navigation.

Researchers will also create an inventory of shellfish and finfish species, and
will monitor gray and harbor seal haul outs inside the Bay.

The purpose of the project is to gather data that will help to inform policy, public
education, and environmental protection of Pleasant Bay and its estuaries. It will
also provide an important snapshot of the state of natural resources in the Bay
on which to base a long-term monitoring program to document environmental changes.

Progress By The Numbers

The seafloor mapping team has spent 16 days conducting high resolution side scan
sonar surveys of the seabed, encompassing 749 track-lines and 280 miles.

192 benthic samples(sediments collected from the upper layers of the seafloor) were
collected from 48 locations; these are undergoing analysis in the lab to determine
the both the sediment type, and the number and range of invertebrate animals at
each location. As of December 2014, scientists have analysed 17 percent of the samples,
and have already counted over 6,000 individual invertebrates and identified 45 species.

Show Your Love for the Whales - And Your Friends!

Late last year an imaginative, talented and passionate friend of the Center came
up with a brilliant scheme to help support the Marine Animal Entanglement Response
(MAER) program.

In her own very limited spare time, and using her own resources, CCS member Sheri
Lee designed and produced this unique cuff bracelet. Hand-crafted from brushed aluminum,
the bracelet features the Center's logo and the numbers 24/7-365, which represent
the hours and days the MAER team is on call to respond to entangled whales, sea
turtles and other marine animals.

Each bracelet is just $20 and, thanks to Sheri's amazing generosity, 100% of revenues
will go directly to the MAER program.

To purchase a bracelet for yourself, a friend, and/or family member, and to support
the disentanglement team, please email Beth Larson [mailto:store at coastalstudies.org]
or call 508-487-3622 x 103.
