KEYNOTE SPEAKER SPEAKS OUT - Barton Seaver
WHEN ASKED WHY DID YOU ENTHUSIASTICALLY ACCEPT the invitation to give a keynote
address at IOS6, Barton responded,
"The international oyster industry has great potential to act with unified voice
to help bring about the restoration of our relationship with our oceans. IOS6
is an important event in creating momentum and bringing together all of those whose
voices are needed in this conversation. Oysters transcend sustainability and are
great teachers if we are willing to come together, learn, and put into action the
lessons they offer."
You won't want to miss Barton's talk. As Director of the Healthy and Sustainable
Food Program at the Center for Health and the Global Environment at the Harvard
School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, he will invite the audience to
consider key strategies and novel approaches to ensure the growth and sustainability
of the industry for feeding world populations and preserving our seas. As a visionary
thinker, he will help us see what is possible and inspire oyster scientists, producers,
entrepreneurs, and consumers to come together and champion oysters and their vital
place in addressing the challenges we face in changing environmental conditions.
It is Barton's belief that the choices we are making for dinner directly impact
the ocean and its fragile ecosystems. And he says, there is no better choice than
oysters considering their multiple benefits and the services they provide.
"IOS6 - you don't want to miss it."

FEATURED PRESENTER
DR.Mitsugu Watanabe, CEO Oyster Research Laboratory
Dr. Watanabe will be presenting on Wednesday during Nourishing the Body, Feeding
the Soul technical session.
Dr. Watanabe believes, "...mutual trust among people can be deepened, sustained
and developed when endeavors are founded on the principle of life's inherent dignity
and worth, paving the way for creative expressions of culture. This belief is reflected
in Watanabe Oyster Laboratory's corporate vision. It is what drives us as a healthcare
enterprise to create a culture in the service of public health in an effort to better
society.
The path to bettering humankind, I believe, lies in facilitating the mutual inspiration
and integration of Western knowledge and Eastern wisdom, and through this process,
bring about a loftier, more humane culture."
Dr. Watanable has presented papers on essential trace metals and cerebral function,
antioxidant capabilities of a novel antioxidant found in oyster meat essence, and
the effect of Watanabe oysters on bone re-absorption action for menopausal women,
and as a fertility treatment.
He holds a Ph.D. in Animal Husbandry, Tokyo University of Agriculture, Tokyo, a
Ph.D. in Medicine, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, and is an Academic Advisor,
Peking University Hospital (China).
Most Recently, in July 2015 Dr. Watanabe gave a presentation at the 39th Annual
Meeting of the Japan Society of Sleep Research, receiving a Best Presentation Award
as one of the best 6 of the 346 presentations made. He is a founding member of
the World Oyster Society.

THE PROGRAM - ADVANCING OYSTERS IN SCIENCE, INDUSTRY, AND CULTURE
Committed to building momentum for oysters worldwide, technical sessions will combine
with interactive round-table discussions to provide ample opportunity to explore
the implications of laboratory and applied science studies and projects, industry
supply chain issues and opportunities, and innovations to build public awareness
and support.
IOS6 explores what we can expect from and ask of the oysterin environmental and
human affairs, now and into the future. Do you see opportunity for economic growth,
a biologic key to health, a declining natural resource in need of restoration, or
compliant machines working on our behalf? Many envision a future with oysters helping
to save our planet's well being by sustaining the ever-growing human population
while keeping pace with sea level rise.
Key questions:
* Are all points of view and interests across the oyster community compatible, or
are some mutually exclusive?
* As a community, how can we vigorously champion oysters without getting in our
own way of realizing the oysters' full potential?
* Where are the successes and obstacles to industry growth, water quality remediation,
repopulation, and community engagement?
* Can we find oyster common ground?
* WHAT IS YOUR KEY QUESTION?
