The Ocean Explorium Ocean Academy and the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution announce a unique professional development opportunity: a
two-part workshop on

Wednesday, October 29, 2014, from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm

Exploration and Research at Deep Sea Vents

   -

Visit two partnering institutions in one day and learn about the most
alien landscapes on Earth: hydrothermal vents of the deep sea!
   -

Part 1: In the morning, visit the Ocean Explorium, see a special Science
on a Sphere®* presentation and learn about how chemosynthesis can add to
   your curriculum.
   -

Part 2: Travel to Woods Hole by bus, eat lunch, see the Visitor’s
Center, go behind the scenes at one of the top oceanographic research
institutions in the world, and tour the Deep Submergence Laboratory where
engineers create vehicles and instruments for exploring the deep sea.

Your guides to this deep-sea world will be expert educators, research
scientists and engineers from the Ocean Explorium in New Bedford and the
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole on Cape Cod.

The workshop will provide content and build understanding of Earth Science
topics adaptable across grade levels, 4-12. Topics covered will include
plate tectonics, hydrothermal vents and how they form, and the strange
animals that cluster around hydrothermal vents and live off chemical energy
in this sunless, cold, and (to us) poisonous environment.

Limited to the first 20 registrants. Participants will receive lunch and
round trip transportation between the Ocean Explorium and Woods Hole, as
well as certification of 6 PD contact hours. Schools will be reimbursed for
hiring substitute teachers for the day.

*The Science on a Sphere® is generously provided through a partnership with
UMass Dartmouth.

This opportunity is made possible by a grant from the National Science
Foundation.
