The Ocean 180 Video Challenge is entering its second year, offering an opportunity for ocean scientists to practice their communication and presentation skills. We would like to invite scientists, students, and teachers affiliated with WHOI Sea Grant to participate. If you have not already, please feel free to distribute this information through your research and education networks as you see fit.
Sponsored by the Florida Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence (COSEE Florida) and funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation, the Ocean 180 Video Challenge is designed to encourage ocean scientists to share their discoveries and excitement for research with the public.
To enter, ocean scientists are asked to produce a 3-minute video abstract summarizing a peer-reviewed paper they have published in the last 5 years. Scientists at any career stage, from undergraduate students to senior scientists, are eligible to participate. A total of $9,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to scientists who best communicate the meaning, significance, and relevance of published research to general audiences.
To select the winners, top entries will be viewed and evaluated by thousands of middle school students from around the world. Last year's finalists were viewed and judged by over 30,000 students in 13 countries, which provided significant opportunity to broaden the impact of their research efforts.
Teachers are welcome to register 6th-8th grade classrooms to participate as student judges until December 1, 2015 on our website: http://ocean180.org/for-teachers/register-your-class.html
Submissions for the 2015 Ocean 180 Video Challenge will be accepted from October 1 to December 1, 2014. Information, previous winners, and full contest guidelines can be found at http://ocean180.org. All questions may be directed to info at ocean180.org
Please let me know if you have any questions. We hope you will be able to share this opportunity widely!
Thank you,
Mallory Watson
