Recent Program Recaps
Kenrick Woods Educational Walk

On Saturday, September 6th, Kris Ramsay, OCT's Director, led an educational walk
in the Town's Kenrick Woods Conservation Area off Namequoit Road. While introducing
the property to the 20 hikers, Kris explained that this conservation area was once
part of a 150-acre piece of property owned by John Kenrick II, who lived from 1819
to 1898. Today this land is owned by the Town of Orleans and managed by the Conservation
Commission. The Orleans Conservation Trust holds a Conservation Restriction over
approximately 20 of the 41 acres preserved within the woodland. This conservation
area is an integral part of an extensive greenbelt on the lower Cape, the largest
contiguous parcel on Cape Cod for groundwater protection, and part of the watershed
contributing to Arey's Pond, which is a sub-embayment of Pleasant Bay.

Release the Terrapins
We are all familiar with the old adage "Build it and they will come". Well, the
multi-year effort of long hours and heavy labor restoring and maintaining the habitat,
along with dedicated volunteerism at White's Lane is paying off. The Diamondback
Terrapin females are recognizing the site as a suitable nesting spot and the number
of nests has been increasing every year since this project began in 2009.
