Details: "Hopes were high and optimism prevailed as White's Lane Conservation Area
sported a new look in the spring of 2009! The land between Henson's Cove and The
 River was cleared of invasive plant species to provide an ideal nesting site for
female diamondback terrapins." (Sue Reiher- volunteer terrapin monitor) In each 
of the last five years the number of hatchlings has been on the rise!
Now we are excited to host a gathering to release 11+ terrapins, which hatched over
the last week. Among other things, participants will learn about where the terrapins
live, when they lay their eggs, when they hatch, what they eat and much more.
Directions: From Orleans center, head east on Main Street towards Nauset Beach and
turn right on Monument Road. Follow for .4 miles and take a left onto Henson Way
 (small dirt road). Follow the dirt road to the end. Parking will be straight ahead.

Kenrick Woods Conservation Area

Date: Saturday, September 6th, 2014

Location: Meet at 35 Namequoit Road, Orleans
Length: 1.5 miles- rolling hills

Details: Starting in 2002, the Town of Orleans acquired three contiguous parcels
 of land between John Kenrick Road, Route 28, and Namequoit Road for conservation
and recreation purposes. These parcels are collectively known as the John Kenrick
Woods Conservation Area. This land is owned by the Town of Orleans, which was purchased
with assistance from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Conservation 
Services.  The Orleans Conservation Trust holds a Conservation Restriction over 
approximately 20 acres of land.

The John Kenrick Woods Conservation Area is an integral part of an extensive greenbelt
on the lower Cape covering over 500 acres. It is the largest contiguous parcel on
Cape Cod for Groundwater protection and is part of the watershed contributing to
 Arey's Pond, which is a sub-embayment of Pleasant Bay.

Fun Fact: At least twenty-five very rare American chestnuts are surviving and propagating
within this conservation area.

Directions: From the intersection of Rt. 28 and Main Street Orleans head south on
Rt. 28 towards Chatham (1.7 miles). Take a left onto Namequoit Road and follow for
.3 miles to the trail head on right. Look for orange cones and a white Ford Ranger
pickup.
