Rainy Day Reading
Ticks "One Bite Can Change Your Life"
Presentation Recap
On Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at 6:30 p.m., the Orleans Conservation Trust (OCT)
hosted the second of three presentations in our Fall 2014 Lecture Series at the
Orleans Yacht Club. Larry Dapsis, Cape Cod Cooperative Extension Deer Tick Project
Coordinator & Entomologist, educated and entertained the 35 attendees with his
presentation titled "Ticks: One Bite Can Change Your Life." Larry's very first slide
contained the quote "I love everything in the world...except for ticks...," proving
the Dalai Lama himself has a distaste for the dreaded tick.

Details:
There is a high degree of misinformation and controversy related to piping plover
protection and beach closings along the Massachusetts coastline. One of the biggest
misconceptions is that they are eaten for food on their wintering grounds in South
America. Off road vehicle organizations and radio personalities often use this argument
when opposing beach closings in the summer months. Thousands of plovers and sandpipers
are killed for food by market trappers each fall using various methods of nets and
whip-wires, day and night, along the coastline of Guyana, South America. None of
these are Piping Plovers....Peter Trull lived with and worked with these trappers
during two research trips, learning about, recording and eating a dozen species
of shorebirds as well as the common terns that we see roosting and staging along
the Massachusetts coast in late summer before continuing south. With never before
seen color photographs of the market trapping process in Guyana, from catching birds
to preparation for the dinner table, Peter will amaze you with a view of a very
different world culture and hazard of shorebird migration that is today called
"BIRDING" in this small South American country.
