This course description is directed towards teachers in the Fairhaven /
New Bedford area, but is available to teachers from other districts.
The Whitfield/Manjiro Friendship Society offers a three credit graduate
course to Fairhaven / New Bedford area teachers each semester during the
school year and the summer months entitled: Whaling, Japanese Culture,
and the Whitfield / Manjiro Story. Participants have the option of
obtaining 37.5 professional development points or paying the Cambridge
College fee for graduate credit. Participants engage in hands-on
activities based on the math, science, social studies, and language arts
Massachusetts Pre-K-12 frameworks. Activities include: learning the
history of Captain Whitfield and John Manjiro with regard to Fairhaven's
whaling days; Japanese culture including language, art, music, cuisine;
ELA, science, geography and math activities related to whaling; a tour
of Captain Whitfield's house, the Whaling Museum and the Manjiro Trail.
Each participant receives 4 complimentary books: K is for Kabuki: A
Japanese Alphabet by Gloria Whelan; Heart of a Samurai by Margi Preus;
Shipwrecked, The True Adventures of a Japanese Boy by Rhada Blumberg;
and Essential Japanese Grammar by Everett Bleiler. Recommended
readings: Manjiro: The Boy Who Risked His Life for Two Countries by
Emily Arnold McCully; and Drifting Toward the Southeast by John Manjiro
are available for purchase the first day of class. Participants also
receive reproductions of primary source documents including Capt.
Whitfield's log, Manjiro's whale sketches and early English lessons.
Teachers create kamishibai story cards and various lesson plans that
they will take back to their classrooms to spread the Whitfield/ Manjiro
story as well as Japanese culture. The class is limited to 10
participants and is held at 11 Cherry St. Fairhaven, MA, the site of the
Whitfield Manjiro Friendship Museum. The team of instructors include:
Debra H. Almeida, Ed.D.; Ayako Rooney, cultural advisor; and Gerald
Rooney, Executive Director of the WMFS.
The WMFS has conducted two sessions of this course. The third will
start on March 15 (already full). A fourth is planned for this coming
summer. Now we will be able to include info on the return of the
