E.C. Nickerson Gift
Land Management

On June 9th, 2014, a group of eight AmeriCorps Cape Cod (ACC) members partnered 
with the Orleans Conservation Trust (OCT) to accomplish a restoration project on
 the E.C. Nickerson Gift, a small 0.69 acre parcel of pine-oak forest ridden with
invasive plant species on Whippoorwill Lane in South Orleans. In 1971, a year after
the OCT was founded, Ernest Nickerson and his wife Shirley gifted this parcel with
the purpose of conserving open space and wildlife habitat in Orleans. Immediately
across the street from this parcel lives Vera Johnson, who remembers when the area
had very minimal vegetation and an open view to Little Pleasant Bay. She was very
excited about the project and walked over several times to see how the day was going.
A volunteer from the neighborhood, Ken Jorgenson, was eager to help clear out invasive
vines throughout the day. The project was funded by the neighborhood and two brush
boxes (large dumpster-like containers) were  provided so stripped vegetation could
be completely removed from the site.

Heyelman Purchase- Namequoit Bog
Land Management

On May 30th, 2014, the Orleans Conservation Trust (OCT) partnered with a group of
thirteen

hardworking AmeriCorps Cape Cod (ACC) members at the Namequoit Bog Conservation 
Area for a full day of habitat restoration and property maintenance. In 1998, the
22.5 acre Namequoit Bog parcel was sold to the OCT with the purpose of preserving
open space and wildlife habitats in Orleans. There are approximately 17 acres of
 wetland-an old cranberry bog with drainage ditches and a sluiceway still evident-and
5.5 acres of upland forest. Since the early 2000's the Trust has been working to
 remove overgrown briar species and encourage native freshwater wetland trees, shrubs,
sedges, rushes, and grasses to re-establish themselves and inhibit the briar monoculture.

Ice House/Reuben's Pond Conservation Area
Educational Walk Recap
On Thursday, June 12th, Kris Ramsay, Orleans Conservation Trust (OCT) Director, 
led an educational walk along the trails within the Ice House Pond and Reuben's 
Pond Conservation Area. As outlined by Kris during his introduction, this area includes
four gifts made up of 6 parcels of land totaling just over 25 acres. The first of
these gifts was given in 1973 and the last in 1996, both donations by the Moore 
family. The conservation area features 1.5 miles of walking trails, with frontage
on Ice House and Reuben's Ponds. Once cleared for farming, the land has now re-vegetated,
with a wide variety of habitat types.
