CAPE COD COMMUNITY

THANKS MASSACHUSETTS DELEGATION

FOR HELPING GET EXTENSION TO COMMENT PERIOD ON

DRAFT MONOMOY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

COMPREHENSIVE CONSERVATION PLAN

(Chatham, Mass....June 12, 2014) On Tuesday, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS)
responded to overwhelming calls for pushing back the comment deadline on the draft
Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge Comprehensive Conservation Plan (CCP) by extending
the comment period for three months. The new deadline is October 10, 2014.

Senators Warren and Markey and U.S. Representative Bill Keating urged the service
to extend the comment period so that communities, managers and stakeholders would
have sufficient time to fully understand the alternatives in the document and adequately
respond.

"This is a huge victory for a small town," said Tom Dempsey, policy director at
the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen's Alliance. "We are grateful to Senators Warren
and Markey and Rep. Keating for helping elevate this important issue and getting
 the deadline extended until October."

"It's good to see our federal government work in collaboration with the town of
Chatham and the fishermen who have depended on the traditional harvesting of shellfish
on Monomoy for generations," said Nick Muto, captain of the f/v Lost, from Orleans,
Mass. "We couldn't have gotten this extension without the help of Senators Warren
and Markey and Rep. Keating. We really appreciate them going to bat for us."

"Chatham owes a debt of thanks to our federal and state delegations, representatives
of our sister communities on the Cape, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries
and all the private citizens who supported our effort to extend the comment period
for the proposed Monomoy CCP," said Chatham selectman Seth Taylor. "Above all, I
think it is important to recognize and thank the USFWS for listening. Ultimately,
the town's goal is to assist the federal government in crafting a final plan that
recognizes all stakeholders."
"We appreciate the work our Congressional leaders did to keep the door open, so
that we have a chance to keep Chatham Chatham," said Michael Westgate, chair of
Chatham's South Coastal Harbor Management Plan committee. "Monomoy is a significant
piece of the town. We need time to present the evidence needed to let traditional
shellfishing continue there as it has since time immemorial."

"As a New England community, Chatham has a 300 year old maritime and seafaring history,
and the areas in question play a vital role in Chatham's historical, cultural and
economic identity which cannot be overlooked," said Jamie Bassett, co-founder, Friends
of Chatham and South Beach. "This extra time will help us to further explain this
importance to the USFWS, and it is our hope that we will be able to find common
ground focusing on a long-term relationship and mutually beneficial sustainability."

A public hearing will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Chatham
High School.
