HISTORY PROGRAM IN EASTHAM (July 27)
The year 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the ship "Mayflower" in what is now Massachusetts.
On Sunday morning, July 27th, environmentalists, local historians, and others, will meet in Eastham, to raise the question, "What, if anything, should Cape Cod 'celebrate' in the year 2020?" The Eastham gathering will take place near First Encounter Beach. This is the place where the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people first met. It was not a happy experience, and, four hundred years later, the story needs to be remembered.
The July 27th gathering will take place at the Chapel in the Pines, 220 Samoset Road, in Eastham. The discussion will begin at 10:00 with a presentation by Robert Murphy, who is local environmentalist who is involved with human rights issues. Bob Murphy is the chairman of the Sierra Club's Cape Cod and Islands Group. He has received awards from the NAACP and the Barnstable County Human Rights Commission.
The Sunday morning discussion is sponsored by the Nauset Fellowship. The public is invited. Much of the discussion will focus on religious naturalists, religious humanists, and other groups involved with liberal religion and environmental issues. Telephone: (508) 240-1979.
