"Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing undermines our businesses as well as
our stock rebuilding efforts," testified Ray.

Captain Ray Kane traveled to D.C. to testify on behalf of the hard working, small-boat
fishermen from Cape Cod and the islands. His testimony focused on the Port State
 Measures Agreement aimed at deterring and eliminating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated
(IUU) fishing.
"Our fishermen feel the double whammy," testified Ray. "Fish that we abstain from
harvesting to ensure a sustainable stock are harvested instead through IUU fishing,
and yet when we do harvest our quota, the markets and prices for our fish are depressed
because of the presence of IUU fish in the marketplace."

Run, Herring, Run!

Wednesday, February 26, 2014, 5:30 p.m.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Author Elliot Carr will conclude the event with a book-signing of his new book Herring
Run: Life and Death at Stony Brook.
River herring have played an important role in the culture, ecology  and economies
of Cape Cod and the islands. Come learn about the plight  of the river herring and
restoration efforts.
Hear from fisherman Buddy Vanderhoop, a Native American of the  Wampanoag Tribe
of Aquinnah, and Chatham's herring warden, Don St.  Pierre, as they discuss Cape
 Cod's river herring runs, what the herring  fisheries were like on Martha's Vineyard
and the Cape, and changes they  have seen through the years.
Speak with the local river herring count organizers about how you can volunteer
to help river herring this spring!
If you missed last month's Meet the Fleet, you can learn more about the decline
of cod from long-time fisherman Fred Bennett in The Cape Codder.
Writer Laurie Higgins begins her story, "One of the sad realities on Cape Cod is
 that the fish our beautiful  peninsula is named after because they were once so
 plentiful no longer  swim in local waters."
