*“SCIENCE MADE PUBLIC” LECTURE SERIES:*On Tuesday, August 19, at 2:30
p.m., the WHOI “Science Made Public” series will host a presentation by
/Alvin/Group Manager Bruce Strickrott, titled “Humans in the Deep Ocean,
From Imagination to Reality.” In 1870, Jules Verne penned his famous
novel, 20000 Leagues Under the Sea, putting on paper as fiction what
many had dreamed about, the ability to visit and explore the unknown
depths of the ocean. From that time moving forward, the dream of
deep-ocean exploration has become a reality and has uncovered profound
discoveries about the planet and the ocean environment. Learn about the
history of human-occupied submersibles, starting from the early
primitive designs and working toward how we operate /Alvin/ today and
the plan to take /Alvin/ even deeper over the next few years. During
this presentation, Bruce will moderate a live phone call to the research
vessel /Atlantis/ to hear first hand about /Alvin’s/ latest
adventures. The “Science Made Public” talks are free and open to the
public. Redfield Auditorium is located at 45 Water Street in Woods Hole.
If you are unable to make it to the talk, it will be webcast at
http://www.whoi.edu/main/public-webcast. For more information, call
(508) 289-2700 or visit http://www.whoi.edu/ScienceMadePublic/.
