Have you been lucky enough to see a snowy owl this past winter?  Or, perhaps a
red-tailed fox? We know it is a bit of a miracle to see a snowy owl since they normally
do not winter on the Cape, but that highlights how fortunate we are in Orleans to
have nature all around us in every season.
Since its inception in 1970, the Orleans Conservation Trust has been committed to
protecting the open space around us.  With 650 acres of meadows, forests and marsh
in conservation, the Trust's lands provide a number of major wildlife corridors 
across town.
To really thrive, wildlife habitats need to be connected, and it is especially important
for larger species, which require significantly sized spaces to survive.  Another
equally important fact is that the larger the corridor, the greater the likelihood
that different animal populations will be able to maintain genetic diversity, which
is especially important on our land-locked island.
If you haven't already done so, we encourage you to renew your 2014 OCT Membership.
As outlined in our "Think Spring" postcard, OCT's 2014 membership year runs from
 July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014. Any individual member, couple, or family trust
that makes a donation of $25 or more during that time period shall be entitled to
cast one vote at the Annual Meeting on August 26, 2014. Donate now and we will send

Town of Orleans 2014 Open Space Survey
The Orleans Conservation, Recreation and Open Space Plan (CROS) describes Town goals
for meetings its open space and recreation needs.  The plan is a required submittal
to the MA Division of Conservation Services which makes the Town eligible for open
space matching grants.  Over the last decade, Orleans has been reimbursed for more
than 50% of its open space acquisition costs.  While the Town is not preparing any
grant applications this year, it is necessary to begin the update process now to
 ensure future eligibility.
Resident's opinions are crucial in the development of a plan that will meet your
 needs.  Please take a few minutes to complete the on-line survey and help Orleans
to continue the development of its open space and recreation programs.  Thank you.
