*Dive and Discover Expedition 15:
Dark Life at Deep-Sea Vents*
January 2-21, 2014
Join our online expedition to examine tiny life in some of the most
hostile environments on Earth---deep-sea hydrothermal vents. On this
cruise, scientists and engineers led by Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution will use the remotely operated vehicle /Jason/ to study
microbes living on and below the seafloor. Unlike ecosystems on Earth's
surface, where sunlight provides energy, deep-sea vents exist in total
darkness, and the microbes derive their energy from chemicals that form
deep inside the Earth and flow out of the hydrothermal vents. How do
they do that, and what's their role in the vent ecosystem and the ocean
at large? This online adventure follows the action aboard the research
vessel /Atlantis/ via daily updates, photos, and videos. Students can
email questions and get personal responses from researchers and crew
members.
The expedition will fit Common Core standards in reading and several
categories in the Next Generation Science Standards.
Take your classroom to sea this winter.
