On Tuesday, June 25th, the Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) will present
the final lecture of its spring series on the current issues in
Sustainability Science. WHRC Associate Scientist Nadine Laporte will speak
on *Forging a New Path to Conserve Congo Basin Forests*.
The WHRC has recently opened a field office in the Democratic Republic of
Congo (DRC) to tackle the problem of forest conservation in collaboration
with forest communities, local NGOs and the government. Dr. Laporte will
discuss why it is important to conserve the world’s second largest forest
estate and how a new carbon finance mechanism known as REDD (Reduction of
Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) could prevent the
Congo from becoming a second Brazil in terms of its large deforested areas.
Dr. Laporte is a biologist whose research centers on the applications of
satellite imagery to tropical forest ecosystems, including vegetation and
carbon mapping, land-use change, and deforestation causes and consequences
on carbon and biodiversity. She has been involved in numerous
environmental projects in Central Africa over the past 20 years, working
with in-country scientists, foresters, and international conservation
organizations to develop integrated forest monitoring systems and promote
forest conservation. Dr. Laporte received her doctorate in tropical
biogeography from l'Université Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, France.
The lecture will take place at 5:30 pm in the WHRC Harbourton Auditorium,
149 Woods Hole Road, Falmouth, MA. It is free and open to the public;
however, parking and seating are limited and reservations are strongly
encouraged. To reserve, email events at whrc.org or call 508-444-1517.
