Stride into summer with these fascinating (and free!) 
guided walks sponsored by Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT).
 
"The Bog Trek" Learn about Box Turtle Habitat at Bank Street Bogs Nature Preserve

Monday, June 10th, 9am

The box turtle has suffered severe population decline due to habitat loss. On this walk with HCT Land Stewardship Intern Laura Carhart, we will wander through Harwich Conservation Trust’s (HCT) 66-acre preserve discussing habitat loss and why it is such a critical time to save land for this species. Walk the Monomoy River Conservation Lands 

Tuesday June 11th, 1pm

Join Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) Land Stewardship Intern Mike Brown on a walk through pine oak woodlands. Mike will talk about the area’s habitats, why these areas are so important to protect, and what is being considered to improve water flow of the Monomoy River (Muddy Creek) into Pleasant Bay.

Cape Cod Geology Walk 
Wednesday, June 12th, 9am

Join Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) Stewardship and Outreach Intern Kristen Kuzil for a walk through beautiful Coy’s Brook Woodlands to learn about the local geology and historic glacial influences on the land. Along the way you’ll learn about the natural land formations we have on Cape Cod and how they came to be thousands of years ago.

The Importance of Salt Marsh Habitat at Coy’s Brook Woodlands

Join Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) Land Stewardship Intern Laura Carhart for an interesting look at salt marshes. Discover why it is so important to preserve these valuable coastal ecosystems and the threats they face today. All ages are welcome.

Back in Time Walk at the William & Barbara Hacker Wildlife Sanctuary 
Tuesday June 18th, 11am

Join Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) Land Stewardship Intern Mike Brown on a walk off of the Cape Cod Rail Trail through pine-oak woods, wetland and former cranberry bogs to hear about the role cranberry bogs played in the history of the land.

Mastering the Marshes of Bells Neck 
Wednesday, June 19th, 9am

Take a guided stroll through the trails of the Bells Neck Conservation Land with Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) Intern Kristen Kuzil. The walk will offer beautiful vistas of both salt and fresh water marshes. Take in the views and learn more about the importance of these fragile ecosystems.

Guided Stroll at Red River Beach
Monday, June 24th, 8am
Calling all birders! Join Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) Land Stewardship Intern Laura Carhart to take a leisurely stroll along Red River Beach. We will be discussing the importance of bird nesting habitats and learn about the local bird species. Bring binoculars to get a better look at local species. All ages welcome.

Herring Walk at Bell’s Neck Conservation Land Walk

Interested in learning more about herring? Join Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) Land Stewardship Intern Mike Brown on a walk around Bell’s Neck Conservation Lands as he explains the herring life cycle and why fish ladders are so important.

Botany at the Bank St. Bogs Nature Preserve

On this guided walk through the Bank Street Bog Nature Preserve, you will learn about the local vegetation and its importance to the abundant wildlife on the site. Enjoy a lesson from HCT Stewardship and Outreach Intern Kristen Kuzil on plant identification and ecology, and gain insight to the wonderful world of botany.

Red River Beach Walk

>From Farms to Forest

The landscape of Cape Cod has changed dramatically in the past 100 years. Farm land of centuries past has returned to its natural state of forest and meadow habitats while many areas have been lost to development. At the Thompson’s Field Conservation Area you can see habitat progression in action. The property was a large farm that was allowed to revert naturally to woods and meadow. Bike Trail Stroll 

Tuesday July 16th, 11am

Want to get outside, but don’t feel like a walk in the woods? Join Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) Land Stewardship Intern Mike Brown on a wheelchair accessible walk along the Cape Cod Rail Trail to learn about the native and invasive plant species of Cape Cod. Great for all ages!

Directions: From Route 6, follow Route 124 to Harwich Center. Make a right on Great Western Road and follow for 2.5 miles. Turn left onto Depot Street. In less than a quarter mile, cross over the bike path and make an immediate left into the parking area.



Hawks Nest Guided Tour
Wednesday, July 17th, 9am

On the Hawks Nest guided tour, led by Harwich Conservation Trust (HCT) Stewardship and Outreach Intern Kristen Kuzil, you will hike the trail between two small ponds, both offering serene vistas. Along the way you will pass a number of interesting sites, including vernal pools bustling with biological activity and old foundations from houses that stood over a hundred years ago. Come explore the beauty and history of Cape Cod on this guided hike.
