[SEMCO] North Atlantic right whale school curriculum unit available

Whale and Dolphin Conservation, New Bedford Whaling Museum, and Audubon Society of Rhode Island have coordinated efforts to put together a power point presentation and curriculum activities to foster education on the North Atlantic right whale, one of the most endangered species in the world (fewer than 500 individuals remaining).  This curriculum is designed to introduce the whales' biology, history, and current threats, while promoting stewardship and action among our students.  At maximum, this right whale curriculum should take three days to complete, but could likely be done in two.  A few of the activities function as homework assignments, such as an online scavenger hunt, whale math and science questions, and a trivia crossword puzzle.

Because of the larger file sizes of the power point and curriculum activities, we are distributing the unit on disks via regular mail or by Dropbox link for download.  This unit is available for free and we would encourage you to share with anyone you think might be interested.

The curriculum contains three files:

·         Face-ing Extinction Power Point Presentation

¨       Includes talking points in the notes section for each slide as a guide to the teacher

·         Teacher's Guide and curriculum

¨       Further information on how to use the Power point and contact information for the program creators.

·         Curriculum feedback form

¨       There are just a few questions on this form, which we ask that you send back to us after you've completed the unit.  To further improve our efforts, it is crucial that we receive feedback on the effectiveness of the curriculum as a teaching tool.
