"Explore the Deep Ocean" Family Science Night
Thu, Jan 16, 5:30-7:30
Ocean Explorium, 174 Union St., New Bedford
Come to the Ocean Explorium in New Bedford for the first of two
complimentary Family Science Nights. We'll have hands-on activities,
special Science on a Sphere® presentations, and you can meet some
underwater explorers first-hand. Among our explorers, we'll have Ocean
Engineer, Dr. James Kinsey, from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
Dr. Kinsey is an engineer who specializes in underwater navigation and
surveying the deep sea with robotic vehicles. The Ocean Explorium's own
Explorer in Residence, Rhonda Moniz, will also be on hand. Rhonda is
founder and director of operations for Benthic Exploration, a company
that specializes in marine technology including ROV, AUV, side scan, and
sub-bottom profiling technology. AND we'll have a/live phone call/ to
the research vessel /Atlantis/ which will be on site overthe East
Pacific Rise, part of the mid-ocean ridge about 600 miles south of
Manzanillo, Mexico. We'll link up with scientists and engineers who are
using the remotely-operated vehicle, /Jason II/, to explore and study
deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Dr. Stefan Sievert, Chief Scientist on the
expedition, will answer your questions about life in the dark of the
deep sea.
