The Woods Hole Public Library is pleased to host cornet player Jeff Hughes and his “Hot Six” jazz ensemble at MBL’s Meigs Room (Swope Center, 5 North Street) on Sunday, August 18 , for a Library fundraising concert. Jeff Hughes first came to MBL as a post-doctoral researcher in 1996 and now teaches in the biology department at Wellesley College. By night and on weekends he and some of the Boston area’s hottest improvisers take to the stage, producing “lots of great tunes, sweet and hot, from the heart of the Jazz Decades.” Their preferred sound is the music of the 1920’s and 1930’s, the great era of jazz and American popular music.
Jeff Hughes (cornet) has been performing classic jazz and swing in and around the Boston area for several decades. With Jeff as leader, the Hot Six includes some of the Boston area’s most popular musicians specializing in jazz age tunes. Jeff is joined by dynamic Craig Ball on clarinet and tenor sax. Gifted pianist Ross Petot is a commanding performer of many American popular tune composers, most notably George Gershwin and Victor Young. Jimmy Mazzy, with his unique single-string style, has inspired international acclaim performing on banjo, and has also won honors as a vocalist. Al Bernard is one of the most respected and in-demand tuba players in New England. Steve Taddeo grew up inspired by Gene Krupa, and his drumming has that same intensity, flair, and drive.
This exciting concert will take place on August 18 at 7:30 pm in the Meigs Room at MBL. Tickets, costing $25, are available at the Library during regular hours, at the Bank of Woods Hole and at Eight Cousins. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door the evening of the concert. Since Jeff’s group in previous years has packed Woods Hole’s Community Hall, concertgoers are advised to buy their tickets in advance. Doors will open at 7 pm . For more information, call the Woods Hole Public Library at 508-548-8961 or check its web site, woodsholepubliclibrary.org .
