Tour a Cranberry Bog
Friday, October 5th, 9:00 am
Join Leo Cakounes for a 1-hr. walk & talk at his cranberry bog.
Directions: From Harwich Center, drive west on Great Western Road for about 2 miles to Depot Street. Turn right onto Depot St. Travel for less than one mile and turn right onto Factory Rd. Drive to end and park on the shoulder. For more about Leo’s tours, visit www.cranberrybogtours.com.
Wild Edibles & Medicinal Plants at Cedar Spring Herb Farm

Cosponsored by Harwich Conservation Trust (www.HarwichConservationTrust.org) and Cedar Spring Herb Farm (www.cedarspringherbfarm.com), join Donna Wood Eaton at her farm for a walk to learn about field-grown as well as wild edible and medicinal plants.
Directions: From Rt. 6, Exit 10, go north 0.5 mile on Rt. 124 and turn right onto Long Pond Drive. Travel 0.8 miles and turn right onto the dirt driveway marked #159.
Explore Coy’s Brook Woodlands

Join HCT’s Ryan Mann on a walk through pine/oak woodlands and red maples with vast salt marsh views. Look for signs of wildlife and discuss enhancements made that can attract different species. Directions: From Rt. 6, Exit 10, follow Rt. 124 south to Harwich Center, go west on Great Western Rd. Turn left onto Lothrop Ave. Parking lot is on the right just past the water tower.
Old Colony Railroad and Harwich Commercial Cranberry Bogs

Join naturalist Todd Kelley of www.kelleytrailblazer.com to learn about the Old Colony Railroad on Cape Cod and its connection to commercial cranberry bogs in Harwich as you walk to Cahoons Canal and Pleasant Lake Village.
Directions: Traveling from the west on Rt. 6, take Exit 10 and go north on Route 124. Turn left onto Headwater’s Drive. Meet at the rail trail parking lot. Traveling from the east on Rt. 6, take Exit 10 and go south on Route. 124. Turn right onto Headwater’s Drive. Meet at the rail trail parking lot.
Wild Edibles Walk at the Bogs Nature Preserve in Harwich Port
Saturday, October 6th, 1:00 pm
Join Russ Cohen, expert forager and author of the book Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten, on a two-hour ramble through the Bank St. Bogs Nature Preserve to learn about at least two dozen species of edible wild plants. Cape Cod is home to over 100 species of edible wild plants, many of which are more nutritious and/or flavorful than their cultivated counterparts. Pending favorable weather conditions, several edible wild mushroom species may be encountered as well. Keys to the identification of each species will be provided along with information on edible portion(s), season(s) of availability and preparation methods, as well as guidelines for safe and environmentally-responsible foraging.
Registration: This walk is limited to 30, so registration is required by emailing hctwalks at gmail.com with email subject line "Wild Edibles Walk" or call 508-432-3997.
Directions: From Rt. 39, take Bank St. 0.5 miles south to the Harwich Harbormaster’s Workshop on the left at #203 Bank Street. From Rt. 28, take Bank St. 0.7 miles north to the Harwich Harbormaster’s Workshop on the right.
Fun with Fungi at Coy’s Brook Woodlands

Join Wesley Price, author of the Cape Cod Mushroom Blog www.mushroomocean.blogspot.com, for a walk through HCT’s Coy’s Brook Woodlands. This walk will include a brief introduction to the taxonomic Kingdom of Fungi and their pivotal role in the ecological landscape. Along the way, focus will include identification and discussion of various genera and species found on the property.
Directions: From Rt. 6, Exit 10, follow Rt. 124 south to Harwich Center, go west on Great Western Rd. Turn left onto Lothrop Ave. Parking lot is on the right just past the water tower.
Forest Succession & History of Thompson’s Field

Natural History at Bell’s Neck Conservation Lands

Join Amy Usowski, Town of Harwich Conservation Administrator, to explore the trails, wildlife habitats, and natural history of the Bell’s Neck Conservation Lands.
Directions: From Harwich Center, go west on Great Western Rd. Turn left onto Bell’s Neck Road (dirt). Drive 0.25 mile and park along the shoulder near the trailhead kiosk.
History of the Monomoyicks at the D. Isabel Smith Monomoy River Conservation Lands
Thursday, November 8th, 9:00 am
Join 12th generation Cape Codder Todd Kelley in the heart of the Monomoyick People to learn about their lifestyle and community from just prior to European contact up until the presence of the last full-blooded Monomoyick, Hosey Stephen, and her husband Micah Rafe.
Directions: From Rt. 39 in E. Harwich, take Bay Rd. 1 mile east. Parking lot is on right, across from Blue Heron Landing.
Natural History of Island Pond Conservation Lands
