RACHEL CARSON TO BE HONORED
Rachel Carson will be honored in Woods Hole, on Thursday, September 27th.
It's the 50th anniversary of the publication of the book "Silent Spring."
Individuals will meet at the sundial, at Waterfront Park, on Water Street, in Woods Hole. The
gathering will start at noon, on September 27th. All people are invited. (If the weather is difficult, the ceremony will move indoors at MBL.)
This event is sponsored by the Rachel Carson Statue Committee. The Committee is raising money to place a statue of Rachel Carson in Waterfront Park, probably at the end of June, 2013. Eric Turkington and others will speak about progress in developing the Carson monument. The
artist will be present to show plans for the statue.
"Time" magazine identified Rachel Carson as being one of the 100 great leaders of the 20th century. She was one of the first women to prepare for a career as a scientist. She became famous for a series of popular books and essays written during the 1950s. In 1962, her book "Silent Spring" appeared.
"Silent Spring" is often identified as the book that inspired the modern environmental protection movement.... Carson received much of her post-graduate education at MBL. Her research and writing were inspired by experiences on Cape Cod and along the coast of New England.
