We're still on for this Thursday!
Research @ Reserve Coffee House at Waquoit Bay Reserve
Thursday, November 1, 7 pm
"Will Salt Marshes Keep Up With Sea Level Rise?"
Sarah Corman, PhD Candidate at Brown University, currently in a joint degree program with the Marine Biological Lab (MBL) and Graduate Research Fellow at the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, where she conducts much of her salt marsh research.
The goal of Sarah's research is to investigate how the foundation species of salt marshes, smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora), will respond to rising temperatures, and to what extent salt marshes can resist drowning with increasing rates of sea level rise. Using field and greenhouse experiments, her research assesses how climate change will affect cordgrass and marsh communities more broadly. She will discuss her research, and drivers of marsh elevation change, in the context of a changing global climate.
Each Thursday evening during the first three weeks of November, a different scientist will discuss their research at the Waquoit Bay Reserve. In addition to explaining the research they're doing, they will include personal anecdotes on how they did the science and how they feel their research will make a difference to those sitting in the audience. This series was created to help expose community members to cutting edge science in a relaxed and informal way. The interactive coffee house format helps people feel equally comfortable asking questions and joining in the discussion or just sitting back and listening to the scientists' stories of their work.
Doors open at 6:45 pm with a chance to view the exhibits in the visitor center and sample some homemade sweets and coffee and tea.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own mug and flashlight for traveling from the parking lot.
Admission is free.
Waquoit Bay Reserve is located at 149 Waquoit Highway (route 28), Waquoit, Massachusetts.
The November 8 program will feature Kevin Kroeger from the USGS Woods Hole Coastal & Marine Science Center with "So a Wetland Walks into a Market..." focusing on the Green House Gas project happening at South Cape Beach in Mashpee. The series will wrap up on November 15 with Scott Lindell and "Seaweed Farming on Cape Cod for Food, Fuel, Fertilizer and Cleaner Water".
