FYI...
The Collaborative Institute for Oceans, Climate and Security
(umb.edu/ciocs) would like to enlist your help. The Global Conference
for Oceans, Climate and Security (www.gcocs.org) opened registration for
GC '12 in January but we really need to ensure the participating
audience represents the best minds we can attract to our dialogue-driven
conference. We hope to attract 250 people and registration, to date, has
fallen short. I'm pleased, therefore, to announce a new special $100
conference fee (available until April 1st, made possible by a generous
donor), for those wishing to come to this unique and important event,
who might otherwise find cost an impediment. Once you've completed your
own registration process, will you please help identify and/or send
people to GC '12? Please forward the attached announcement to your
friends, colleagues, list-serve, etc. as soon as possible. Or, if more
convenient, you may send this link:

We need an intellectually robust audience at GC '12 and have only a few
weeks to take advantage of this generous subsidy. I hope you can help.
You will find, attached, the conference agenda; I think it's stellar.
In addition, the U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus will receive the
Collaborative Institute Energy and Environmental Security Award and we
look forward to his acceptance speech on May 22nd. A luncheon keynote
address will be presented by NOAA Administrator Dr. Jane Lubchenco (Day
2 in the beautiful JFK Library and Museum) and evening receptions with
great local food and drink include a welcome by Boston Mayor Thomas
Menino (Day 1 atop the UMass President's Club in downtown Boston) and a
special presentation by Mr. Weatherman Dr. Jeff Masters (Day 2 after
Sec. Mabus's award ceremony). Luminaries leading panels throughout the
conference include your own fellow advisors as well as Captain Wayne
Porter (USN and noted "Mr. Y"), Robert Winokur (Technical Director,
Office of Oceanography of the Navy, Chief of Naval Operations) and
others.
We also have interesting workshops shaping up on Monday (Day 1)
including one on Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning with an
introduction by the newly appointed Director of the National Ocean
Council Deerin Babb-Brott - the Collaborative Institute's Program
Director on loan to the White House. (
http://www.whitehouse.gov/administration/eop/oceans).
The comprehensive agenda of cross-sector topics situated at the
intersection of climate change adaptation, human and national security,
and oceans management will address some of the most pressing
environmental and security challenges facing the world today. I hope
you find a way to help make GC' 12 a wonderful experience for all.
Please feel free to contact me or Tina Stanton, Development Assistant (
