READY, SET, GROW!
Gardening Workshop Series at the Farm at Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary
Growing your own food has seen a revival in recent years and this series
of workshops will equip you with all the information necessary to grow a
wide range of highly nutritious, organic vegetables at home. The course
will take you from the planning and seed starting through the harvest.
Participants will be given extensive handouts to take home to get them
started.
March 31 Backyard Chicken Workshop 9:30 - 11:30 AM
Learn the basics of raising chickens for fresh eggs in your backyard.
First, is it right for you; what are the local bylaws. Then, where to
buy chicks and when, what's involved with raising day olds or should you
buy pullets (teenage hens), and what kind of protection can you take
against predators. We'll also cover how to prepare for a small flock and
care for baby chicks. What type of housing and your feed options, as
well general care. Instructors will give a variety of options and
perspectives. Maximum: 15 participants Members $25

Basic Vegetable Garden Courses
April 7 Garden Planning 9:30-11:30 AM
Getting soil ready for planting; a discussion and hands-on session which
will include the importance of a healthy soil and how to achieve it.
Including soil organisms, ph and soil testing methods and liming, soil
fertility and texture, organic matter and organic fertilizers, seed
starting indoors, garden planning, rotations and garden location.
Maximum: 15 participants Members $25 Non-Member $28
April 21 Garden Preparation and Planting
9:30-11:30 AM
Cultivating the soil and all the support systems for your plants.
Topics include tools and techniques, irrigation, creating a raised bed,
container gardening, demo planting peas, spinach, lettuce, potatoes,
mulching and much more.
Maximum: 15 participants Members $25 Non-Member $28
June 9 Keeping the Garden Healthy and Thriving
9:30-11:30 AM
Minimizing weeds and insect damage. We will cover weeding tools and
techniques, nurse crops and cover crops, disease control with an
emphasis on observation and prevention. Also, good biological and
organic controls for disease. Plus a bonus segment on when to plant for
a late fall harvest. Planting some vegetables in July will yield a
great fall harvest of many cold tolerant veggies.

Other Gardening Workshops
May 19 Small Fruits 9:00-10:00 AM
Learn about soil preparation and care of strawberries, raspberries and
blueberries.
This will be a hands-on workshop where we prepare the soils and plant
each kind of fruit. Also, learn which plants to purchase and how to
rejuvenate and prune them to have years of luscious berries.
Maximum: 15 participants Members $15 Non-Member $18
May 19 Flower Gardening 11:00-12:00 AM
Create a small garden that produces a bounty of flowers. Learn what
flowers do well on Cape Cod and which are best for cutting. Learn easy
soil preparations to enhance flower growth and organic methods. Also we
will show you harvesting practices and methods for long lasting cut
flowers.

Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the north side of Rt 6a in
Barnstable. Trails are open daily dawn to dusk. Sanctuary admission is
free for members; $4 adults, $3 children for non-members. Call (508)
