Greetings FACES Members and Friends,

Please join us on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 7 pm at the Falmouth Public Library for an enlightening talk entitled, ‘The Living Resources and Water Quality of Buzzards Bay: Trends and Opportunities,’ with Dr. Joe Costa, Executive Director of the Buzzards Bay Estuary Program. Attached is a flyer for the event. Please feel free to disseminate it to interested friends and colleagues.

Dr. Costa will talk about the criteria of a healthy estuarine ecosystem, the human activities that threaten the health of our estuaries, why healthy estuaries matter so much to people and all the other creatures who depend on them, and what we can do to protect and restore water quality and habitat in Buzzards Bay and its surrounding watershed.

Our coastal waters are endangered, primarily by excess nitrogen resulting from human activity. Government efforts to address the issue include the updated Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan for Buzzards Bay and
new Federal water quality standards. As Dr. Costa will discuss, meeting the challenges associated with the new water quality standards and TMDLs adopted by the USEPA will not be easy, but is necessary.

Dr. Costa is eminently qualified to discuss problems of and solutions for our impacted coastal waters. He is the longtime Executive Director of the Buzzards Bay National Estuary Program, a planning and technical assistance unit of Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management. He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Ph.D. from the Boston University Marine Program in Woods Hole. His graduate, postdoctoral
research and professional work has focused on the impacts of coastal development on water quality and coastal habitat, especially those impacts caused by nitrogen inputs. In his work at the Buzzards Bay NEP, he was the lead in establishing the Massachusetts alternative Septic System Test Center, helped develop state policy on a wide of issues, and helped
municipalities design and implement solutions.

Please join us for an enlightening talk and light refreshments.

We look forward to seeing you there!
