Research at the Reserve Coffee House Series
Thursdays, March 15, 22 & 29
7:00 PM
Visitor Center
There is no charge for the series, table seating is limited, first-come first served.
Come join us for an informal evening learning about the cutting edge research happening at Waquoit Bay Reserve.
Each week, you'll learn from a different scientist about how they do their research, what they're discovering and how it applies to
today's issues. There will be ample time for informal discussion and questions.
We'll serve hot coffee and sweet desserts to complete the coffee house atmosphere.
Climate Sanctuary Thursday, March 15
Lisa Greber, , Green Boston Harbor Project (UMass Boston Research Associate), and Ma'yan Tikvah, a Wellspring of Hope (Nature chaplain intern)
Faith communities have strong traditions of stewarding human communities through generations. Under the auspices of a NOAA/NERRS social science fellowship, Lisa had the opportunity to learn from faith leaders and faith communities about the ways their faiths touch on issues of environment and climate, and their commitments to stewardship of each other and the earth.
She will share some of the results of this research, as well as its applications in her own home estuary of Boston Harbor.
Wastewater problems on Cape Cod: Can wood chips be used to clean up our groundwater? Thursday, March 22
Ken Foreman, Ph.D., Researcher, Ecosystems Center at the Marine Biological Laboratory, and Director, Semester in Environmental Science
For the past six years, Dr. Foreman, several of his colleagues at the MBL Ecosystems Center, and their students, have been testing out an innovative strategy for cleaning up nutrient pollution in Cape Cod bays. Come hear about the Permeable Reactive Barriers installed at the shoreline of Waquoit Bay several years ago. What is the principle behind them? Are they working? How do they fit into town wastewater planning?
Cape Cod Storm Chasers Thursday, March 29
Chris Weidman, Ph.D., Research Coordinator, Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
As Hurricane Irene approached Cape Cod, most people were rushing to remove their boats and equipment from coastal waters. But over at Waquoit Bay, Reserve researcher Chris Weidman and a few other scientists were rushing to get their scientific equipment set up in the Bay! Join us for our own local version of Storm Chasers (through some amazing photos) as Chris shares what he found out.
