Bring your class to Woods Hole where we, the Zephyr Education Foundation, host school field trips where students experience hands-on learning in oceanography, marine biology, and technology used in marine research. We are a non-profit educational organization.
On our boat trip, we travel about 1-2 miles into Vineyard and replicate a hands-on scientific cruise. We (actually the students) deploy an underwater towed video camera which provides a live feed on-board and allows us to discuss different habitats and marine animals living there. We then deploy a dredge to collect invertebrates (urchins, stars, crabs, etc.) as they do at the labs here and we discuss how they are used in research. We also do a plankton tow and highlight several projects at WHOI while we discuss research techniques, goals and relevance of that research. We deploy and recover an acoustically-releaseable oceanographic mooring with a data logger to illustrate some of the engineering technology used in oceanographic research. As part of our program we also discuss potential career tracks, occupations, and opportunities for further education and internships.
On our walking tour, we visit a wet lab at WHOI where we maintain two specimen tanks. This lets us discuss the specimens in more detail (and handle them) and discuss the biomedical research performed with them. We also visit part of the WHOI dock to see some of the equipment and the original Alvin sphere (and discuss some of the work the Alvin has done over the years). Classes can also visit the Woods Hole Scientific Aquarium at NOAA in WH and the WHOI Exhibit Center.
We host one class per day and therefore dedicate our efforts only to your class. While most of the classes who visit are high school level, we also host colleges and middle schools.
Over 1000 students have participated in this program in each of the past two years. More information can be found on our website www.zephyrmarine.net
I have attached a page of comments from students and teachers who have experienced our program. These comments are really special.
