CAPE COD TRADITION

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Rachel Carson's book "Silent Spring."

Every year, for the past nine years, environmentalists on Cape Cod have honored "Ray" Carson's work with a Rachel Carson Dinner in Falmouth. This year, the dinner takes place at the Unitarian Universalist church in Falmouth, on Saturday night, April 21st. The doors open at 6:30 pm. The building is located at 840 Sandwich Road in East Falmouth. It's easily accessible for people with disabilities. All people are invited.

NOTE: This is a very simple, potluck vegetarian meal. If you bring food for six people or more, you will be asked to donate $10 to the fund for constructing the Rachel Carson statue in Woods Hole. If you decide not to bring food to share with others, you will be asked to donate $20 to the construction fund.... All of the money collected will be given to the statue fund...... No family will be asked to donate more than $35 total.

Sunflower Awards will be presented to Eric Turkington and to GreenCAPE, to thank them for their work in protecting Cape Cod residents from environmental hazards. Rachel Carson's good work continues.

"Ray" Carson was one of the first American women to develop a career in the marine sciences. She is still a role model for girls and women who are interested in math and science. However, Carson is best known as a major source of inspiration for today's environmental protection movement and for community health workers. "TIME" magazine identified her as being one of the 100 great people of the 20th century.

Carson began her involvement with the marine sciences in 1929, in Woods Hole. It's appropriate to honor her work, at an appropriate site in Woods Hole.

The Rachel Carson Dinner is sponsored by Falmouth's Unitarian Universalist church.
