COSEE Ocean Systems and NEOSEC Workshop
Strategies for Engaging in Broader Impact Programs
November 4, 2011
Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
149 Waquoit Highway, Waquoit, MA 02536

On November 4th, 2011, the COSEE Ocean Systems and the New England Ocean
Science Education Collaborative (NEOSEC) will host a free workshop for New
England area scientists, graduate students, and educational leaders on
³Strategies for Engaging in Broader Impact Programs² which will take place
at the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve beginning at 9:00
a.m. in the boathouse.
The workshop is specifically intended for pairs or small teams from NEOSEC
organizations who would potentially submit proposals that promote ocean
science literacy. For example, the workshop could be appealing to senior
scientists who want to help their graduate students write grants, while
fulfilling their own broader impacts at the same time. The workshop will
showcase a spectrum of broader impact programs for scientists to partner
with formal and informal education programs as well as highlight best
practices in partnering with these institutions based upon survey data and
research. During the afternoon session, participants will engage in a
professional development opportunity by Tom Wolff, Ph.D., from Tom Wolff &
Associates <http://www.tomwolff.com/index.shtml> , a nationally recognized
consultant on coalition building and, the author of The Power of
Collaborative Solutions. A Request for Proposals will be announced at the
workshop in order to spark collaborative projects that involve senior
scientists and educators and/or graduate students.

Dormitory-style lodging is available upon request at the reserve for a fee
of $20. Lodgers must bring their own sheets, pillow, and towels. For
dormitory reservations (required) please contact Sheri Proft at 508-457-0495
x100 or sheri.proft at state.ma.us. To register and/or for more information

NEOSEC <http://www.neosec.org/> is a diverse networked collaboration of
more than forty institutions from across New England, including aquariums,
museums, universities, government entities and science and research centers.
NEOSEC¹s mission and collective purpose are to leverage New England¹s
extraordinary assets, to engage the public in understanding the vital
connections between people and the ocean.
Ocean Systems <http://cosee.umaine.edu/> (OS) is one of fifteen Centers for
Ocean Sciences Education Excellence <http://www.cosee.net/> (COSEE) and is
funded by the National Science Foundation. Our goal is to help the COSEE
Network reach rural and inland audiences. We create and evaluate
interconnected tools and techniques that broaden understanding of oceans in
the context of the earth and solar systems.
