As part of the intensive planning effort to tackle wastewater treatment and disposal concerns on Cape Cod, the issue of whether ocean outfalls could be part of the suite of solutions applied to this problem has been raised.  Ocean outfalls involve discharging treated wastewater to the ocean through outfall pipes.  This symposium will provide information on how ocean outfalls work and the implications of potentially using them as a wastewater management strategy.  Information on the history of outfalls, federal and state regulations, environmental impacts, as well as policy, planning and legal issues will be presented, along with case studies.

The symposium is part of an ongoing series of wastewater workshops organized and delivered through the Waquoit Bay Reserve Coastal Training Program (CTP). It is meant to be strictly educational in nature and is being planned to provide science-based information to decision-makers working on wastewater issues. It is not meant to advocate for ocean outfalls.
