TEACHER SEMINAR: MARINE ANIMALS & HABITATS OF CAPE COD & THE SOUTH COAST REGION

Formal and informal educators are invited to join us for a one-day teacher workshop to learn about marine animals and habitats of Cape Cod and the South Coast Region!

DATE: Saturday, May 7, 2011
TIME: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm (includes half hour lunch)
PLACE: National Marine Life Center, 120 Main Street, Buzzards Bay
COST: $60 per teacher (includes lunch)

PDP's: 10 (through a partnership with Museum Institutes for Teaching Science, Inc., www.mits.org)

COURSE SUMMARY: This course provides an overview of the natural history and habitats of Cape Cod and the Southcoastal region.  It will include a look at the individual species morphology, physiology and behavior, as well as the conservation techniques used to protect these indigenous marine mammals and reptiles.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Participants will gain an understanding of a marine habitat as it deals with the interrelationships between the biotic (animals) and the abiotic non-living conditions that are needed to sustain animal life.
2. The group will become aware of and identify the following native marine animals:  cetaceans (7-8 species); pinnipeds (4 species); reptiles (5 species) by specific features.
3. Class members shall gain an awareness of local conservation efforts that are focused on native marine habitats and animals through rescue, rehabilitation and research.
4. The participants shall come to understand the significance of environmental protection and problem solving in order to sustain viable populations in our marine habitats.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This course is linked to Massachusetts curriculum standards and is suitable for teachers of primary school, middle school, and high school.  Teachers will receive a packet of information along with activities they can use in the classroom.
