A Vanishing Heritage: Wildflowers of Cape Cod

With Mario DiGregorio, author and Falmouth Representative on the Cape Cod
Commission

Mario DiGregorio, author and Falmouth Representative on the Cape Cod
Commission, talk will center on our native flowers and how the invasive,
non-native plants are threatening them. There are approximately 2700
species of plants in Barnstable County, of which 1700 are native
(pre-colonial). Our community of natives is now being threatened by invasive
non-native plants, including the recently discovered kudzu which is
migrating rapidly from the south. Many of our native flowers cannot compete
with these invasives and have diminished in number in the past 20 years.
"VH" will display those that were once common and are among our most
beautiful and graceful species.

Mr. DiGregorio is an Emerson College graduate and first Conservation
Administrator for the town Brewster. He served as a federal park ranger for
the National Park Service for ten years, is a member of the Bourne and
Falmouth Conservation Commissions and is currently the Falmouth

Representative on the Cape Cod Commission. He is the author of three books
focusing on the botany of New England and was the recipient of the MA State
Award from the New England Wild Flower Society in 2001.
