RELIGION AND ENIRONMENT

In Massachusetts, a variety of religious groups and leaders are involved
with coastal areas protection issues and other environmental concerns.

For the second year in a row, the national Sierra Club has presented a
Special Service Award to one of the leaders in the Unitarian Universalist
Fellowship of Falmouth, on Cape Cod. Last year's Special Service Award went
to David Dow. This year's national award is being presented to Rev.
Robert Murphy.
(Typically, the national Sierra Club presents 2-3 Special Service Awards in
 a year.)

David Dow, a retired Woods Hole marine scientist, has long been active
with ocean and coastal protection work. Since the 1980s, he has been
involved with wastewater management issues on Cape Cod and he has been
outspoken in protecting drinking water supplies. Dr. Dow is a member of the
Unitarian Uiversalist Fellowship of Falmouth. He has helped the
congregation to organize service projects and adult educational programs to benefit
the coastal environment.

Rev. Murphy is the church's minister. He has been active in human
rights and environmental protection work for over forty years. In May, he
made his third trip to the Gulf Coast to assist with rebuilding programs and
emergency services projects in Louisiana.

On Wednesday night, July 13, the Unitarian Universalist church in
Falmouth will show the movie
"Renewal: Stories From America's Religious-Environmental Movement."

The movie will be shown at 7:00 pm. The Unitarian Universalist church
is located at 840 Sandwich Road in East Falmouth. Admission for the movie
will be free. All people, of all faith traditions, are invited.

The "Renewal" movie presents stories about Jews and Christians, Muslims and
Buddhists, and others, who are working on environmental protection
projects in the United States.
